At our Baltimore Cataract Surgery Office and Cosmetic Center, we currently offer the most advanced lens implants available today. Lens implants are currently the only treatment option for patients suffering from cataracts. Standard monofocal lenses have been used for decades to safely replace natural, crystalline lenses clouded by cataracts. However, these traditional lens implants have a significant drawback for patients who experience nearsightedness and farsightedness. Following cataract surgery, these patients still retain standard vision defects that require corrective eyewear.
Multifocal lens implants have been successful for correcting cataracts and improving near and far vision. The introduction of the accommodating lens, allows our patients to receive multidimensional vision correction at our practice. These accommodating lenses give patients the best possible vision by improving focus at near, far, and intermediate distances.
Crystalens®, ReZoom™, ReSTOR® Candidates
They have all been approved by the FDA for the treatment of cataracts. Of the lens implants available at our practice are best suited for patients who are seeking improvement in the overall quality of their vision, and would like the opportunity to see well at all ranges without glasses.
The implants can also serve as an excellent alternative to LASIK surgery for patients with moderate to severe hyperopia. Patients who have previously undergone eye surgery may also be candidates for lens implants at our practice. These implants can help to correct vision problems that may have appeared after laser vision.
The implants may also be successful for presbyopia correction. Currently, presbyopia can be treated with Monovision laser vision, or CK (conductive keratoplasty). Presbyopia is generally thought to result from a loss of elasticity on the lens of the eye; as such, Laser surgery to reshape the cornea is not always the best option. Because the implants are flexible replacements for the natural hardening lens, they are an excellent alternative.

This is one of several accommodating lens implants introduced at our practice. It is used first and foremost for the replacement of cataracts, but it has the added bonus of allowing cataract patients to see clearly without glasses for the first time in their life. While traditional lenses only allow patients to focus on objects at a set distance, this has a special hinge design that lets it move backwards and forwards, allowing the eye to focus at every level of distance, near, far, and intermediate. This procedure is extremely safe, requiring only a small incision near the cornea that will heal on its own after placement of the implant. Most patients achieve 20/20 vision or better after receiving lens implants at our practice, and statistics show that over 90% of patients report that the implants eliminated their need for glasses.
It is a second generation lens implant designed to provide hyperopic cataract patients with greater independence from glasses and contacts. It has a unique multifocal design that allows it to distribute light over five optic zones, giving patients a range of vision that monofocal lens implants cannot match. At our practice, candidates for lens implants include cataract patients who have had their lens removed and who would benefit from enhanced near vision. It is extremely effective at reducing the need for glasses across a range of distances.
It is one of the most recent lens implants to be approved for the treatment of cataracts. At our practice, it is an option for patients who wish to eliminate cataracts and also reduce their dependency on glasses. The lens implants can successfully treat presbyopia, and are particularly effective for improving close-up vision. The lenses have an added benefit for non-cataract patients; namely, they eliminate the possibility of cataracts later in life. The lenses are placed in the same manner as lens implants. The natural lens of the eye is removed, just as it is in cataract surgery, and the implant is placed in less than 10 minutes.
